Andie

“She didn’t have to die,” Liv said. “I came so close to saving her.”

She sniffled, and I looked up from my notes. Tears streamed down her cheeks. I had no clue how long she’d been crying.

Lyle got up, her chair scraping the floor. “I’ll go get some tissues.”

I barely registered her leaving the room. I was too focused on Liv. How could I have been so shitty not to notice she was hurting? How could I have missed the minute she started crying?

“I’m so sorry,” I said.

She waved me off. “It’s okay.”

“It’s not okay. It’s…” Before I could think about what I was doing, I clasped her hand between mine. She didn’t pull back. “You’ve been through a hell of a lot, Liv. Most people in your position wouldn’t be able to string two words together, let alone a whole statement. You’re not only doing your best. You’re blowing this out of the water.” I winced. “Pun unintended.”

Liv kept her eyes on mine. She squeezed my hand. “Thank you so much, Sergeant.”

“Andie,” I corrected her. “Please, Liv. You’ve earned that much from me, at least.”

Joy had never looked at me the way Liv did at that moment: like I was the only shred of sanity she had, the anchor tethering her to the earth. I devoured that feeling. I wanted more of it. I wanted to be everything Liv needed me to be.

That’s when I realized the chief had been right.

I was in over my head, and there was no escaping.

Liv squeezed my fingers. Her eyes went wide, but she didn’t pull her hand back. Nor did she return what had to be my longing look with any of her own, though.

“What happens when I’m out of here?” she asked. Her voice was low and soft.

I knew what she was asking, as well as what she wasn’t. But I couldn’t exactly come right out and tell her that I understood. If I was wrong — as much as I doubted I could be — I’d get both of us in trouble.

“Do they have you staying somewhere?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer. Changing the subject was easier than lying.

“Hotel on Fifth,” she said. “Protective custody, officers escorting me to and from. They think I’ll hurt myself or I’ll leave town or something. But you know that.” Her eyes narrowed, and for the first time in a long time, it felt like we were back to square one. “What aren’t you telling me, Andie?”

“You asked me what happens to you after this,” I said. “The short answer is… I don’t know. I’ve never handled a case like yours before. Once you’ve given me the rest of your account, I’ll write up an incident report, and maybe I can get them to fast-track my request to investigate further.” I paused. Her eyes weren’t so narrow anymore, but they were still sharp, taking me in. “I want to go look for the sirens.”

“No.” Liv’s voice was so low, I almost didn’t hear it.
